Educational Trip 1999 Page 3

The picture to the right shows a 4 year old girl with Hydrocephalous, who does not have very long to live. She has the most gorgeous blue eyes and longs only for love and attention, like any other youngster.

When the youngsters reach the age of 18 years, they have to leave Tatarai for pastures new. If they have made good progress or have had the necessary medical treatment, they may be able to return to their families, if they exist.

This young boy picture left has not been so lucky. He is alone in the only place he can call home.

The picture above shows young children at play in the infant unit on the site. All have mental or physical ailments but they play, blissfully unaware of the day to day problems of just living another day. Many just rock back and forth where they sit and receive little stimulation. Others, like the young men in the picture below are mobile and semi-independent.

The orphanage stands in about 5 acres of ground and was, until its recent past, a grand hunting lodge.
CopDrop planted an orchard in the grounds the last time we went, which was in April 1999. The trees are doing very well and we hope that they will start bearing fruit next year. It might be renamed 'The Millennium Orchard!' Let's hope that it marks the start of more good works to be achieved at Tatarai in the future. Already the young people we took Romania have declared that they will return when they can to help the
ir less fortunate peers.
